10 Reasons To Visit Beautiful Edinburgh in 2019
Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital is perfect for a short getaway. A city many of us may not know too much about, however it is very much worth exploring! Apart for J.K Rowling writing most of the ’Harry Potter’ books here, it’s medieval, the old city is filled with history and beautiful architecture, it also has a chic and elegant side, making it fun well-rounded destination to explore.
What should you explore while visiting:
Edinburgh’s old city is a wonderful place to start. In general, Edinburgh is a small city so it’s very easy to find your way around.
A fun activity to try on for size is the ghost & history tour. The tour takes about an hour and half and you will be introduced to the underground city made of 17th century tunnels still intact underneath the city, the many stories bringing it all to life.
Edinburgh Castle. The views and the story this castle tells are worth going uphill for.
Walk the Royal Mile, the heart of the old city. You’ll find interesting museums along the way.
There are day trips you can take from here which are not too far and are wonderful! My absolute favorite is visiting this chapel and the lovely village of Rosslyn. “When I decided to write The Da Vinci Code, I knew that its finale would have to take place at the most mysterious and magical chapel on earth — Rosslyn.” ~ Dan Brown. This beautiful chapel was founded in 1446 as a place of worship where services continue to be held to this day. It’s profile greatly increased after the publication of Dan Brown’s novel in 2003, and the subsequent film, and for very good reason! Another fun day’s activity is to go up to the Highlands. It’s also where many films were shot such as ‘ The Highlander’ & ‘Harry Potter’. And finally, explore the area most famous for the monster mystery- Loch Ness. Does Nessi exist?..Hmmm Look in to the phenomenon of the enormous creature that is believed to live in these waters, who knows, you mind be the one to solve the mystery!
If you are a whiskey lover than you’ll love this city! From cozy whiskey bars to whiskey tours to whiskey rooms at the heart of the old city where you have the chance to sample different whiskies in classic surroundings. Did you know that the Scottish Gaelic word for whisky is uisge beatha which means the water of life? Sounds about right ;-)
Shopping! There many lovely shops to explore, my favourite is Harvey Nichols. You can choose from high-end designer stores such as House of Fraser to a range of high street department stores such as John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams. There are also small more niche boutiques. Princes street & George street is where you start.
Have a picnic in the park at the heart of the city.
This hotel is an institution and it’s just gorgeous! Famous for their Christmas decorations. Stop by even if just to take a look. The Dome Bar and Grill. Perfect for lunch, high tea, dinner, and drinks. Reservations are a must!
Visit the Royal botanical garden. Definite flower power.
If you are a Harry Potter fan then this trip in J.K Rowling and Harry’s footsteps is a must!
If you are traveling during the month of December, you’ll find big Christmas markets and a funfair at the heart of the city to explore.
