6 X Golden Tips For Haarlem, The Netherlands

Haarlem is a beautiful city filled with history and charm. It is also just a short drive from Amsterdam, perfect for a daily city trip! Haarlem is easy to explore on foot or by bike, the center of town is small and all the worthy spots are circled around it as you often see in Dutch cities. You can even take a boat ride sailing along the river Het Spaarne and the canals, the views from the water are even more spectacular!

6 X Golden Tips For A Perfect Day In Haarlem

Start at the heart of Haarlem and visit St.-Bavokerk: Now a Protestant church, it is formally a Catholic cathedral located in the central Market square. This beautiful Basilica and its wooden tower which can be seen from miles away as its 78 meters high have a unique interior and atmosphere. This medieval Basilica is one of the largest in The Netherlands, probably most famous for the huge Müller Organ, artistic and colorful stained windows, and 400 gravestones.

For some local culture visit The Frans Hals Museum: In 1950, the museum was split into two locations, one showcasing historical art masterpieces while the other showcases a collection of modern art.

Haarlem is filled with narrow alleys and hidden courtyards that are well worth exploring: From the main streets, you'll find narrow alleys decorated with pretty flowers and greenery and once you walk and get in a little deeper, you'll discover beautiful old architecture, little restaurants, and terraces where you can take a short break and take in the local vibes.

The courtyards are a historical feature that can be found in many cities around The Netherlands and date back centuries. These courtyards were used to house single poor unwed women or widows. The oldest remaining courtyard in Haarlem is one called van Bakenes, founded in 1395.

The Golden streets are seven charming streets with beautifully stylish boutiques full of unique and exclusive products and brands. If vintage is your thing, there are fabulous vintage stores here. They are all located around Market square.
