Questions To Answer Before You Start Packing

How long is the flight? What type of climate would you be landing in? Are there any particular documents you need to arrange for this specific destination? Think about visa requirements, having a valid passport for at least six months, and vaccination requirements.
Check the baggage allowance your chosen airline allows: The size of carry-ons, weight, and the number of carry-on items allowed per person.

To avoid any issues when checking in or having to pay for overweight which is very pricy, make sure you have the answers in mind when packing!

PRO TIP - Don’t forget when possible to check-in online in advance, and aim to arrive at the airport on time. Eliminate unnecessary stress factors when possible.

WAIT! Did you remember to arrange your travel insurance yet? YOU SHOULD!

The journey starts with having the right personal carry-on bag & a carry-on trolly depending on your personal preferences. I always travel with a personal travel tote bag and a carry-on trolly that fits the size requirements of most airlines.

What Essential Items Must You Pack In Your Carry-On Luggage?

Travel Documents ~ This part is essential for you to be able to board your flight!

September 2021 update: Make sure you have checked the Corona restrictions at your destination! Make sure you have the necessary Corona-related documents.

Double-check before leaving home for the airport that you have all these items:

  • Passport- Make sure it is valid for at least 6 months. If you need to have an entry visa, vaccination documents, and special insurance details, make sure to have them with your passport.

  • Travel & Health Insurance- Take out the right insurance for your trip and personal needs. Double-check both your travel and health policies to make sure you have the right coverage.

  • TIP! Make a photocopy of your passport and proof of insurance and put it in your luggage. In case you lose it or worse, have your passport stolen. This will save you a whole lot of stress and time when applying for a new one at your destination.

  • Have a list made of Emergency Telephone Numbers And Emails both for your home as well as your destination. Think about your bank, credit card company, insurance office, and your embassy.

  • E-tickets, transfers, and other vouchers you need such as hotel, rental car, or organized tour.

  • Boarding Pass- If you check in online, make sure you have the printed boarding pass with you or the QR code on your phone.

  • Wallet - Make sure you have your credit/debit card and a small amount of cash in the local currency to make sure that upon arrival at your destination, you have enough cash to tie you over in case they don’t take credit cards and the ATM is closed.

In general, traveling with cash is necessary, not only in case of an emergency but also for places that don’t usually take credit cards such as the local markets, taxis, or small shops in remote villages.

  • Make sure you have your driver’s license in case you need to drive or have rented a car.

Have a change of clothes with you just in case things go wrong- When I was scheduled to fly back from Costa Rica a volcano erupted in Iceland causing immense travel chaos and so, after an 11-hour delay, we finally landed in Paris. We missed our connecting flight home. We obviously could not get to our luggage, and our carry-ons were all we had. I was truly grateful for having a set of clean clothes!

Flight Gear

As we enter 2021, COVID-19 is still here so a face mask will be necessary for travel in the near future.

Have your phone, laptop, Kindle, Ereader, and tablet fully charged. In addition, have a power bank and chargers with you. Make sure your films, E-books, and music have been downloaded so you don’t have to depend on in-flight wifi to do so. It will let you down every time…

PRO TIP! Bring a Power Cube with you. This is a multiple charger-adaptor. Due to its cube-like shape, it solves the problem of multiple electronic devices needing to be charged.

Music is a great way to entertain yourself during a flight, it is more relaxing to take time away from the screen in my opinion, books, and magazines are too!

Pack Noise-Canceling Headphones- You’ll thank me later!

Personal Hand Sanitizer

Getting Comfy During Your Flight

It is normally cold on planes, if you dress in layers you will be well prepared, after all, it’s better to be too warm and lose a layer than be cold and uncomfortable for the duration.

PRO TIP! Have a large scarf with you that can double as a cover-up. This is a good substitute in case you’d like a blanket and they don’t have one on board. There are travel blankets you can buy but they normally take up a lot of room so this option is more practical.

Sleeping Mask

Earbuds

The Neck Pillow is a must! How embarrassing is it when we fall asleep and lean on the shoulder of the person-total stranger next to us, right?

I always pack a pair of compressive socks with me so I can take my shoes off while still keeping my feet warm and relaxed. Using this type of socks is also recommended by doctors as they are designed to promote blood circulation and oxygen flow. This helps to prevent cramping, fatigue, and swelling,

Food And Drink

In general, if you are traveling with a low-cost airline food and drinks will not be included; you can purchase items from their food assortment during the flight but honestly, I don’t recommend doing it. It is a limited selection and pricy.

Other commercial airlines will have food and drink included in the ticket and if you have purchased a packaged holiday, normally it is included as well. Make sure you know what your airline's tickets include and what they allow and NOT allow for you to bring on board.

Note: Alcohol is not allowed on board unless purchased on board.

I normally prepare my own sandwiches and snacks to bring on board together with my reusable ustainable water bottle. If you would like to buy water or other bottled/canned drinks, make sure to do it after passport control and the security checks otherwise, you will lose them…

Sustainable Travel Tip!

Regarding Travel-Size Toiletries- Most airlines allow bottles of a maximum of 100 mm. These items will need to be packed in individual see-through plastic bags.

Take steps to travel plastic-free starting with this item- Have a Bamboo Toothbrush & Paste.

Makeup and Makeup Remover

Face Moisturizer and Hand Cream- Our skin tends to get very dry on airplanes due to the air conditioning system so this can help you refresh and look good.

I normally pack headache pills as well as motion sickness pills. Another alternative is the motion sickness patch which many travelers swear by compared to pills in recent years. Don’t forget any medication you are currently using. If it’s a medication prescribed to you by your doctor, make sure you have the actual prescription with it!

Sanitizer Wipes

Tissues

Mini Deodorant

A small Bamboo Hairbrush (remember traveling plastic-free?), comb, and styling items such as gel or mouse.

A mini Shaving Kit for men is optional if it complies with the airport-airline guidelines.

Perfume or Cologne for men. BULGARI is my go-to perfume! I love their refreshing flowery scents. And if you can’t choose just one, they have a special travel set. For each flight, pack a different scent!

Lip Balm or Moisturizer

Plasters & Bandages

If you wear Contact Lenses make sure you have an extra set, a container to put them in should you want to take them out during the flight, and solution.

Miscellaneous Items

Plug Adaptor - Different countries have different outlet plugs and voltages they use, this plug will ensure you will be able to use all your electronic devices wherever you are.

To avoid your data being stolen or your phone and laptop being hacked which is the risk you have each time you use a public network, make sure you have access to secure Wi-Fi. I have a limited amount of secure Wi-Fi in my mobile bundle so I bring with me a VPNet ~ virtual private network as an extra measure of protection. This gadget creates an additional layer of secure encrypted communication.

Mini Facial Sunscreen and Insect Repellent in case you need it immediately upon arrival at your destination.

Sunglasses

A Camera and Accessories

PRO TIP! I normally carry my jewelry for the trip in my carry-on and not my luggage, a lesson I learned after the airline lost my luggage, twice! Luckily I did manage to get it back however, it was a very unpleasant experience. I recommend having your valuables with you on board!

This is the complete travel checklist you need so you are ready for your next flight & travel adventure!
