🇬🇷 KARPATHOS: Best Beaches, Villages, Food & Things to Do

Karpathos: The Greek Island for When You Want Something Different

Let me introduce you to Karpathos!

Karpathos is a little different. And I say that as someone who absolutely loves a good beach club, a cocktail by the sea, and a holiday that occasionally ends at 3 am 😂 But Karpathos isn't where I would send you for that. This is the island you choose when you want something slower, more traditional, authentic, and a little more real.

Think mountain villages, tiny fishing harbours, ridiculously clear water, family-run tavernas, local wine, thyme honey, handmade pasta, and long lunches that somehow turn into an afternoon. Here, the highlight isn't finding the newest beach club. It's sitting in a taverna, eating something you've never heard of, drinking local wine and chatting with the people at the next table. The locals are super friendly, always open for a good chat.

It's driving through the mountains and suddenly stopping because the view is too good to ignore.

It's swimming in a tiny bay, then arguing about where to have lunch.

It's Greece without the rush.

It is rugged, traditional, wonderfully unfussy, and still deeply connected to the people who live there.

Pigadia

📍 PIGADIA. START HERE

Pigadia is the main town and harbour of Karpathos, and it's where I would start getting a feel for the island. This is also where I recommend you stay.

Hotel Tip! Parsol Luxury Suites

Take a walk around the old town and harbour, sit down for a drink with a view, wander through the little streets and watch the fishing boats come and go. It isn't trying to be Santorini. It doesn't need to. The charm is in the everyday island life. Walk the rocky headland to the cliffside churches above the harbor for amazing panoramic views.

Food Tips:

Sofia’s Place. Mama Maria. La Mirage.

🏔️ OLYMPOS — THE ONE YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

If there is one place that really gives you a sense of old Karpathos, it's Olympos. The mountain village sits high above the sea, with whitewashed houses, colourful details, narrow lanes and traditional architecture. But what makes Olympos interesting isn't just how pretty it is. It's the fact that traditions, food, dress, architecture, and local culture have remained such an important part of life here.

Did you know that this is one of the last remaining matriarchal societies in Europe? To this day, the women rule here! Wander through the village without a checklist. And definitely stay for lunch.

🍴 My lunch stop: TABEPNA Olympos. This is the kind of place I mean when I talk about authentic Karpathos. It's right in the village centre and serves traditional Greek/Karpathian food, including local specialities. Family-run, every dish made with love!

Olympos

MTT NOTE ❤️

Order something local rather than defaulting to the usual Greek salad + souvlaki combination. This is where you try makarounes, Karpathos' handmade pasta traditionally served with butter, caramelised onions and local cheese. And leave room for loukoumades with honey. You'll thank me later.

🌿 MENETES: SMALL, PRETTY & VERY KARPATHOS

Menetes is one of those villages that doesn't require a huge itinerary. Just walk. The village is built into the mountains, with traditional houses, narrow streets, and beautiful views. It's also a good area to experience some of the island's agricultural side. And if you like local food, keep your eyes open for thyme honey.

Karpathos is known for its honey, particularly thyme honey, thanks to the abundance of wild thyme and herbs across the island.

Traditional Greek crafts

MTT TIP 🍯

Buy some. Seriously. It makes a very good edible souvenir.

🐓 CHICKEN BAY

Yes, it's actually called Chicken Bay. And yes, you should go. This is one of those stops that feels more like a local discovery than a major tourist attraction. Go for the beach, the water, and the relaxed atmosphere. This is exactly the kind of place where you should bring your swimsuit, towel, and absolutely no schedule.

🌊 ARKASA

Arkasa is a lovely combination of sea, village life, and history. The area sits on the southwest coast, with beaches nearby and the remains of Paleokastro, an ancient settlement on the rocky peninsula overlooking the sea. The archaeological site has remains spanning different periods of the island's history. Walk around the village, explore the coastline, and combine it with nearby Finiki.

Which brings me to...

⚓ FINIKI — LITTLE FISHING VILLAGE, BIG LUNCH ENERGY

Finiki is tiny. And that's the point. My favorite stop on the island! A little fishing harbour, colourful boats, waterfront tavernas, and that very relaxed Mediterranean feeling. This is where I'd plan a long lunch by the water. Fresh fish, seafood, local wine. No hurry. Some current options include Καπετά Γιάννης and Athera Meze Finiki.

MTT TIP 🐟

Don't order what you already know; instead, ask what was caught locally that day. That's usually the better answer.

🏖️ LEFKOS

If you want a beautiful beach day without the feeling of being at a giant resort, put Lefkos on your list. The area has several bays and clear turquoise water, with the landscape still feeling relatively low-key. This is a swim + lunch + read a book + swim again kind of day.

MTT NOTE 🌊

Don't underestimate how nice it is to have a day with absolutely nothing planned beyond:

Apella Beach

beach → lunch → beach.

More beach options:

Apella Beach: Ranks among Europe’s best white pebbles, turquoise water, and pine trees.

Kyra Panagia

Diakotis

Amoori Beach

🏝️ AMOOPI

Amoopi is another great place for a beach day, with several little coves and clear water. It's close enough to Pigadia that it's easy to combine with other plans. And if you're lucky enough to find Skala Bar open during your visit, the location is worth knowing about for the views over Amoopi. And place the legendary order of a milkshake with ouzo. 😄

⛵ TAKE TO THE WATER

One of my favourite ways to experience Karpathos is from the sea. There are boat excursions from Pigadia and Diafani, with trips ranging from swimming and snorkelling stops to full-day excursions around the coastline.

Depending on the trip, you can combine:

• swimming in remote bays
• snorkelling
• hidden beaches
• coastal caves
• fishing villages
• lunch on board or at a seaside stop
• sunset cruises

MTT TIP ⛵

Don't just book the first “boat trip around Karpathos” you see. If you're already spending your holiday exploring beaches by car, choose a boat trip that takes you somewhere you can't easily reach by road.

That's where the magic is.

🏝️ SARIA: THE WILD SIDE

And then there is Saria. This is the boat trip I'd particularly look at. Saria is an uninhabited island just north of Karpathos, separated from the island by a narrow channel. It's wild, rocky, and dramatically beautiful.

Boat trips typically take you to Palatia, where you can swim, snorkel and, depending on your excursion and energy levels, hike into the gorge and explore the remains of old settlements.

Saria is also protected as part of the Natura 2000 network and is home to important wildlife.

🍷 EAT KARPATHOS

Honestly, one of the things I loved most about the island was the food. Karpathos has a very strong local food culture, and it is much more interesting than simply eating “Greek food” every day.

🍝 Makarounes

The dish to try. Handmade local pasta, traditionally served with butter, caramelised onions, and local cheese such as sitaka. Very Karpathos.

🧀 Local cheeses

Look out for:

• Manouli
• Armyrotyri
• Meriari
• Sitaka

They have very different textures and flavours, and they turn up in traditional dishes across the island.

🍯 Thyme honey

Karpathos is known for its thyme honey, produced from the island's wild herbs and thyme-covered landscape. Try it with yoghurt. Or with local sweets. Or, honestly, just buy a jar and eat it with a spoon when nobody is looking. 😂

🍷 Local wine

Don't skip the local wine. The mountainous interior around Othos and Volada has vineyards, and Karpathos is particularly known for its semi-sweet red wine. Local varieties include Fokiano and Athiri, alongside other varieties cultivated on the island.

MTT TIP 🍷

Ask for the local wine, not simply “house red”. You are on an island with its own wine tradition; try it.

🍩 And something sweet...Look for:

Loukoumades: little fried dough balls with honey.

Xerotigana: fried pastry spirals drizzled with honey.

Baklava

Pasteli / sesame-honey sweets

And if you see a local sweet you've never heard of...

order it! That's how you discover things.

🌿 THE KARPATHOS INTERIOR

This is the bit I think many visitors miss. Everyone talks about the beaches. But Karpathos is mountainous, dry, agricultural, and surprisingly green in places. Drive inland towards villages such as Othos and Volada, and you'll see vineyards, olive trees, small agricultural plots, and mountain landscapes that feel worlds away from the beach resorts.

MTT NOTE 🌿

Karpathos isn't just a beach destination. And honestly? That's one of the reasons I liked it so much.

❤️ MY KARPATHOS FORMULA

If you ask me what to do:

Pigadia → get your bearings
Olympos → see traditional Karpathos
Menetes → village + honey
Arkasa → history + sea
Finiki → fish lunch
Lefkos → beach day
Amoopi → coves + swimming
Saria → wild island adventure
Boat trip → see the coastline from the water
Othos/Volada → wine + mountainous interior

It's for the traveller who wants to see how people actually live on a Greek island, eat food made from local traditions, swim in ridiculously clear water, drive through mountains and villages, and have a glass of wine while watching the sun go down.
