Mauritius is a magical island located in the Indian Ocean just off the Eastern coast of Africa. It is so much more than what we typically expect from a tropical island. The beaches are gorgeous, the clear water turquoise lagoons are simply breathtaking, you can hike in the mountains, explore the rainforest, and chase waterfalls...The history and local culture are very interesting to learn about, with spiritual vibes, and religious temples that will touch you regardless of your religion.

Did you know that more than 50% of the population of Mauritius comes from India and is Hindu?

NOTE: Visas are not necessary to arrange in advance, visitors receive a 60-day tourist visa upon arrival.

The Best Time To Visit

Mauritius has a tropical climate meaning it’s warm and sunny year-round. The best time starts from May through to December which is the dry session.

That being said, IMPORTANT to know: Nowhere is it written online nor shared by fellow travelers, and I've done serious research like I always do before booking & planning my trips; There's not really a dry season like we’ve come to know on this side of the world.

Expect rain almost daily throughout the year. The locals explained to me that they have rain even during the dry season, the weather report on the island is given every 12 hours due to how dynamic the weather has here. But don’t worry it’s mostly 5 to 10 minutes of tropical showers and it's over while the temperatures don't change and remain warm. We visited in December, we had showers in the morning and around 30 degrees throughout the day. It would have been nice to know in advance though.

Take away: You can't be sure dry will be dry 100% of the time, so just be prepared.

Where To Stay

We stayed at Radisson Blu Azuri Resort & Spa a magical resort located on the Northeast shores of the island. It’s a great location to enjoy what Mauritius has to offer. The island is easily explored while staying here.

The resort is directly on the beach, so you can enjoy the stunning views, go for a swim, take a boat out or a kayak, and just relax on the beautiful white sand. The restaurants three in total, one being the main dining room, all have a sea view balcony.

Watch picture-perfect sunsets while holding a delicious cocktail (or beer) in your hand. You have two beautiful outdoor pools and a spa. The staff is the most friendly and accommodating I have ever seen! Nothing is too much- The guests come first.

It was amazing to watch how they transformed the beachfront into a New Year's Eve extravaganza, and all in under two days! The structure was huge with beautiful festive decorations. The tables were stylish, and bars were put both outside and inside. The food was sensational! A band played throughout the evening, and of course fireworks on the beach, it was insane!

Top Activities You Must Do When Visiting Mauritius

Visit the Ganga Talao temples: This is a crater lake that on its shores sits a temple and a collection of small shrines dedicated to Shiva as well as other gods. Another big attraction is the giant Shiva statue right before driving down to the lake, it is quite spectacular to see.

Enjoy the incredible white sand beaches and clear water! Palm trees, coconuts, sunshine, and pure calming views, what more can we ask for, am I right? The beaches on the Westside are said to be the most beautiful of all but I would say Northside was spectacular too!

There are lots of activities to choose from once you're ready to shake things up after sunbathing and chilling all day.

Boat trips, catamaran sunset sails, dolphin watching, snorkeling, diving, and wait for it...Sea Walking!

This is such a unique experience and oh so much fun. From Grand Bay, you go down about five meters wearing a special divers helmet and weights and you get to walk on the bottom of the ocean for about 20 min. Grand bay also has a buzzing nightlife with good restaurants, bars, and live music to enjoy.

For water sports lovers; Ile aux Cerfs is the place to be!

Have lunch and a rum tasting in the stunning Rhumeri de Chamarel: This place is so pretty and relaxing! You can have a tour and learn how they make their famous Rum after which you can have a taste and there are many fun flavors to try on for size. My favorite new flavors were coconut and gold rum! There's a shop where you can purchase rum and souvenirs and a big restaurant with tables set in a gorgeous garden filled with a stylish ambiance.
