Visa & Vaccination Requirements

New Zealand passport holders are the only ones who can apply for a visa upon arrival. US citizens need to arrange an ESTA visa. No vaccinations are required.

When To Visit Tasmania

Tasmania has four seasons, it can get quite wet and cold. The best time to go is during the summer season, between December and February. This exciting island is all about outdoor activities and enjoying mother nature, the summer will offer you the most comfortable dry way to do so.

Getting To Tasmania

You can get to Tasmania either by air or ferry. Regular flights depart from Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane flying direct to Hobart or Launceston. Flying in will be the fastest way and most likely cheaper overall. If you do choose the ferry, expect to be on the water for about 11 hours.

How To Get Around In Tasmania

Driving is the best way to discover the island. It's easy and safe to drive around and it's the best way to enjoy your surroundings. There is also a railway, buses, and shuttles running between the main towns of the island if you don’t opt for driving yourself.

Spend time in the mountains! That is an absolute must-do activity! The National Park to explore is Cradle mountain-lake st. Clair Park is definitely my favorite! There are several walking & hiking trails you can follow, ranging from short walks of just 20 minutes to 9 hours for the more experienced hiker.

Rivers, rainforests, waterfalls…The ancient King Billy pines which are up to 1500 years of age, totally blew my mind! Unique vegetation can be found here, a spot within the park not to be missed is Dove Lake, picturesque and oh so relaxing. And there’s so much more!

Visit Zeehan: A former mining town holding some of the oldest histories of any part of Tasmania, it still has that wild west type allure and character. The biggest reason to stop here is the breathtaking nature surrounding the town.

History lovers should stop at the West Coast Heritage Center and Pioneers Museum. Hike to the top of Mount Zeehan, it offers 360° views of the surrounding area making the effort worthy. Take a walk down to the harbor, from here, walk the country's longest beach. It's too beautiful for words!

Other lovely towns worth a visit are Elizabethtown, Sheffield, and Deloraine.

Strahan: A small town connecting to the Gordon River and Tasmania’s largest park; the Southwest National Park. The BEST way to enjoy the stunning scenic views of the nature that surrounds you is by taking a cruise on the Gordon River! be sure to catch the sunset on the beach.

Visit Field National Park: The landscape in this area offers eucalyptus rainforest, alpine moorland, waterfalls, and hiking trails. You’ll find Russell Falls, perhaps the most famous waterfall in all of the land!

Hobart: This modern, fashionable city is the capital, it is located on the River Derwent. History, architecture, and natural beauty await you. Warehouses here host restaurants, bars, and galleries.

Visit Salamanca Market: A street market located in the historic Salamanca Place on the waterfront. You’ll find here over 300 stallholders! Anything from clothes, local crafts, ceramics, cheese, wine, art to organic products can be found here.

Drive or take the bus to the top of Mount Wellington: The summit offers spectacular views, and the park is breathtaking in its own right. Hiking trails, wildlife, biking, and more activities are available.

Visit Port Arthur: This World Heritage site is a collection of almost 30 buildings that used to be a British prison back in the day. This is an open-air museum and though most of the original buildings are ruins these days, there’s plenty to explore such as the Hospital and the Convict Church. There are ghost tours you can join. Check out the tours going to the Isle of the Dead Cemetery, and the Point Puer Boy’s Prison, both just a boat ride away.

Devils Kitchen: Drive down the coast to Waterfall Bay and enjoy the stunning views around you; marvelous cliffs, patterned rocks, and the sea. Don’t forget to stop at the Tasmans Arch Lookout, seeing the Blue Hole is an amazing experience!

Spice things up by rafting on the Franklin River: White water rafting in the World Heritage-listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Scary yet exhilarating at the same time!

Abseil the Gordon Dam: This is still on my ‘To Do’ list, this activity has been included in the Top Ten adrenaline activities list in the world! 140 meters and not for the faint-hearted, which is why I haven’t done it yet lol
