Dutch Destinations- The Magic Of The Wadden Island Of Texel!

Texel, the Netherlands

Texel, the Netherlands

Did you know that the Netherlands has five fabulous islands called the Wadden Islands?

You might be wondering which islands I'm referring to as many people are not aware of the existence of these beautiful islands, to be found in the north of the Netherlands. They are worthy of a visit and here is the kicker ~ You'll get that island feel however with a big twist, and the activities you can do here are unique to this region!

The Wadden Islands

The Wadden Islands

The Wadden Islands are an archipelago located in the North Sea just off the coast of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark and are shared by these countries. The name means mudflat; the Wadden Sea has many sand flats as it is quite shallow and when low tide takes place these are uncovered, big areas of the sea are then dry allowing people to cross on foot and wander around between the islands.

Imagine you are walking on the sea's bottom, a crazy feeling at first! A popular activity here is looking for crabs, mussels, and oysters and watching the seals. Enjoying walks for no particular reason is awesome too in such settings.

These five islands are so relaxing and picturastic! They have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are all a protected nature areas. Think sea views, a beautiful stretch of beach, dunes, and hills which are perfect for walks and horse riding, and watching wildlife such as seals and wild birds.

Each island has something unique to offer, my personal favorite is Texel, which is also the biggest of the five; incredible nature, sailing, cozy villages, and over 30 kilometers of gorgeous beach. The food, language (they speak Frisian in these parts), and even the local culture are all different than on the mainland, very interesting to experience in itself.

Getting to Texel

Drive to Den Helder and take the 20-minute car ferry to Texel. Getting to Vlieland and Terschelling means taking the ferry from Harlingen.

The Best Things To See And Do On Texel

This was my favorite thing to do-Take a cruise: Sail out during the low tide and go for a mud walk looking for crabs, oysters, and other sea creatures otherwise hidden. It’s just an awesome experience!

We booked with zeestarx35 leaving from Oudeschild harbor and it was wonderful! I highly recommend them!

Visit Ouderschild: Oudeschild is a small, pretty, and yet vibrant harbor village. From here you can take your boat ride, go on fishing trips, enjoy fresh fish and drinks on the waterfront.

Visit Ecomare in the village of De Koog: This place is a combination of a seal (and other marine life) sanctuary and a nature museum. The location is stunning too as it is in the Dunes National Park. Take some time to explore this charming village once you’ve done it.
