What Do You Need To Know About Traveling To Luxembourg?

Getting To Luxembourg

We drove down from Amsterdam which was a wonderful trip in itself. When you're driving you can do it as fast or as slow as you wish. You can discover places along the way off the beaten track only visible when you're driving through. I think this country is best explored by car because it’s small it’s the most comfortable way to get from A to B. Of course, flights are available too as well as trains.

How Long Should You Stay In Luxembourg?

Luxembourg is perfect for a 4-day/long weekend escape. We stayed here 4 days in total before driving back to The Netherlands, it felt it was just enough.

Best Time To Visit Luxembourg

Spring and summer! Everything is in full bloom during springtime, rivers and streams are flowing, and the vibes are dynamic and fun. Summertime is warm and very busy. Personally, I love crowds if you’re not like me then springtime is the best time for you.

Accommodation Tip

We stayed at the Bel Air Hotel and it was amazing! It's a gorgeous building showcasing beautiful architecture, it has great recreational facilities including a fitness center and a beautiful indoor pool. It's surrounded by views of the Sauer Valley. Its located just outside the medieval town of Echternach.

Best Things To See And Do In Luxembourg

#1 Visit Echternach: This small town located 5 minutes from the German border is famous for its medieval look, history, and even activities. The town’s highlights: Stop by the Basilica of St. Willibrord, and wander around the narrow streets taking in the ambiance and the architecture.

Visit the old city and market square, often you'll see here during the weekend different medieval activities acted out; people dressed in medieval style clothes, playing music and dancing routines copied from ancient times. Don't miss out on the Echternach lake! Located outside the town it's perfect for letting your hair down, walking, biking, and picnicking out in nature.

#2 Visit Vianden castle: There are a few castles to choose from, we spend almost a day exploring this castle and its surroundings. This castle is one of the largest West of the Rhine river. Originally dating back to the 10th century, it was built in Romanesque style with Gothic touches added at a later date.

Once you have explored the fortress and don't forget to taste the local liquor made of cherries it’s yum. There are walking trails you can take going deeper into the forest and streams surrounding the castle; breathtaking and fun to walk.

#3 Visit Luxembourg City: The best way to uncover the magic of this city is by foot. It is a hilly city with quite a bit of up and downs, it might not be easy breezy walking at times but it will definitely be worth it! Make sure you explore both parts of the city.

Did you know that Luxembourg is a sovereign state since 1353? Visit the Grand Ducal Palace. This is a key symbol of this country and how it operates, it's also quite something! You will have a few bridges you can cross getting you from one side of the city to the other going over the Pétrusse river, one of the most famous rivers which offer beautiful panoramic views.

The Adolphe Bridge is a famous arch bridge that has a lower and upper deck. Not to be missed is Walk Le Chemin de la Corniche, often referred to as the most beautiful balcony of Europe, and the views are truly breathtaking! Walk through the historic quarter and then, in contrast, the Grund neighborhood. Stop by the Notre Dame Cathedral & the Saint Michel Church.

There are many museums to choose from. It's best to check, preselect, and order your tickets online in advance for better rates as well as no lines.
One of my favorite parts of the trip was to explore Moselle Valley aka wine country: Tranquil villages, picturastic landscape and beautiful wineries.

Explore the Mullerthal region: It's a stunning area also known as "Little Switzerland". How you explore this area is depending on you, you can hike the whole trail or you can reach certain points by car and walk shorter parts of it which is what we have done. Think waterfalls, caves, and just beautiful forests. The length of time spent here is open to your interpretation.
